Undercurrent

Recently, I was on Terschelling with wonderful people for a conference on infinity. When we shared what the theme meant to us, a friend explained that, for him, it was about making himself so small that he could allow the infinity of life to enter.

For me, infinity means boundlessness. But how does one align with life itself and move from limitation to boundlessness? The tension here lies in the fact that, on a personal level, the seeker within is always on a journey—away from this moment. It is the contracted energy of seeking that prevents one from seeing what is shining right before their eyes, closer than close. With great finesse and persuasive power, one is repeatedly tempted to embark on a quest and become distracted from what truly exists in the here and now. However, the seeker is never present; it is always searching for something other than what is, with its attention focused on the past or the future.

The most effective way to ensure that you do not find yourself is to keep searching. In the act of seeking, one’s identity—the persona—is reinforced, leading to a deeper immersion in the illusory experience of being separate from life. Thus, the seeker within perpetuates the narrative, a brilliant strategy to avoid what it fears the most: its own absence.

It is unimaginable from the mind’s perspective to stop searching, to cease contracting, and to become receptive to the magic of life. The idea that one no longer needs to control, regulate, or manipulate life in order for it to function is simply inconceivable. And yet, all it takes is a moment of zooming out and observing nature to see how extraordinarily intelligent and harmonious life organises itself when one refrains from interference. By nature, I do not only mean the plant and animal kingdom but all facets and principles that govern life. As humans, we often forget that we are an integral part of this nature. I suspect this is because our unique self-awareness gives us the impression that we autonomously manifest everything through free will and choice, exempt from the principles of the natural world. However, if one were to consistently see themselves as part of this logical flow of life, it would become evident that its inherent laws are always applicable to humanity as well.

How life cares for you is a profound mystery. You neither need nor are able to explain, comprehend, or control everything—and why should you? The compassionate nature of life continuously invites you to surrender into its embrace and allow it to care for you. This underlying current has always been there, always is, and always will be. The only thing that has happened is that you have embarked on a search to rediscover it, even though it has never left you.

Allowing this underlying current begins with a conscious invitation. By doing so, you acknowledge that life wants and is able to care for you—far more completely, humanely, and naturally than you could ever imagine. You invite life by continuously observing what is alive within you in the present moment, for that is the underlying current that incessantly communicates with you. Your incredibly intelligent body reveals how you relate to what arises. The combination of consciously observing your experience and compassionately embracing it fosters and develops transparency within your awareness. You gradually step aside and create space for the infinite bandwidth and intensity of life without taking it personally, seeking to control or change it. As a result, you can experience everything freely without being burdened.

This way of conscious softening initially feels like a free fall. What happens when you become truly available, step aside, and allow life to take its course? It is both the most terrifying and liberating thing you will ever do. You will experience that, with enchanting precision and timing, your life unfolds magically and effortlessly—not from a place of contraction, but from a state of flow.
